The 33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
High School Senior Essay Scholarship Award Contest


Awards will be made to students who plan to attend a college as a full - time student during the fall of 2018 and who needs financial assistance. Students must also demonstrate moral character, serious educational purpose and leadership in the tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.


Entry Criteria

All interested students are requested to complete the application and submit the form with:

  1. Two (2) letters of recommendation (one from the School District and one from a community or religious organization).
  2. A copy of official transcript
  3. Picture for Luncheon program
  4. A completed copy of the 2016 Federal 1040 Income Tax Return for the family. No application will be accepted without financial information on both parents or guardians. If financial information is not available on one parent, the extenuating circumstances must be documented for an essay to be considered. If the family received Public Assistance, please Xerox the current identification and include the Xeroxed copy when submitting the application form. Documentation must also be supplied for Social Security and disability income.
  5. A 200-300 word essay on "How have the accomplishments and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. affected or impacted my life and society." These materials must be submitted to WIlma Tootle, DR. Martin Luther King, JR. Birthday Celebration Committee of Nassau County, Inc. 240 Old Country Rd., Room 606, Mineola, NY 11501. Essays must strictly adhere to the topic or will be disqualified. Essays will be judged based on originality, theme, historical accuracy and overall style.

MANDATORY ATTENDANCE: All winners are required to attend "The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Luncheon." Scholarship awards may be forfeited if the recipient is not legitimately excused from these events. Schools are encouraged to enter as many students as they wish in this contest.

ALL COMPLETED FORMS with essays must be received by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Committee, Nassau County 240 Old Country Rd., Room 606, Mineola, NY 11501. The 2017 application period has expired. Please check back in September 2018 for the 2018 application cycle. Please send all documentes to:

No essay will be judged unless accompanied by a completed application form and all support documents. The decision of the Committee is final.

IMPORTANT: A completed copy of your family's 2016 Federal 1040 Income Tax Return must accompany your application. If your family is on Public assistance or Social Security, please complete and attach the appropriate form to your scholarship entry. No essay contest entry will be processed without the required documentation.
